5.1 Procedures of My Teaching
·The first step that I did was to consult my Cooperating Teacher regarding the topics that I would teach. The Cooperating Teacher informed me on what to include in the discussion. I consulted her about the lesson plans (activities, content, application/evaluation, and the materials).
During the teaching hour, I had to motivate the students first. I usually begin the discussion with a video presentation and a group or individual activity. The activity are often in the form of a game where the students are made to enjoy. Through this, it also allowed me to measure their prior knowledge about the topic. Next is the presentation, wherein I discuss the subject matter. I usually focus on the essentials and often call students randomly. I use a strategy wherein I ask students to give me a number, a color, or sometimes I ask students who are born in a certain month. It is a way to make sure that the students pay attention and by the time that I call them, they are able to answer a question. I also encourage my students to read and speak in English. I also utilize power point presentation since it’s beneficial in showing media and it helps in maximizing the time. My power point presentation also includes Thai translation, in which I consulted my teacher if the translation is correct. Since English language is not used every day and some students are struggling in English, the Thai translation helps them to understand the topic.
The third step is the application wherein I don’t usually utilize paper and pencil test. I use activities where the students are able to enjoy and learn. I believe that the school is a place where the students are made to learn and enjoy rather than fearing or developing anxieties and frustrations over their learning difficulties. The "application proper" enables me to measure the understanding of the students regarding the subject matter.
The last part is generalization, where I ask my students to summarize and to ask them to see the importance on why they have to learn the topic.
5.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities
First, I provided activities that are not time consuming. Although, some of the activities haven’t been encountered by the students before. The problem is more on the misunderstanding of the instruction. Most of my activities are group activities, in which the students cooperate and collaborate with one another to achieve their goal.
·
In the power point presentation, I insert short explanation and images in order for the students to understand more the subject matter.
I also utilize traditional materials, in which I have noticed that the teachers do not often use since their classrooms have already installed projectors. I often used traditional materials during my motivations.
5.3 Problem-solving
The problems I had encountered were more on language barriers and English resources. Since not all students can understand English very well, aside from placing Thai translations, I had to use simple words and gestures in order to express my point to the students.
When it comes to resources, I looked at the internet for English materials and resources since their Social Studies books were written in Thai.
5.4 Classroom Management
To retain the attention of the students on the discussion, I frequently call students randomly when there are no volunteers. I also call the attention of the students who are not listening by asking questions or asking them to read the statements on the power point. When the students are able to answer my question or succeed in doing a task, I usually give praises or rewards.
During activities, I also roam around the classroom and check on the progress of every student.
5.5 Your Overall Impression in Teaching
Teaching students who speaks another language poses a great challenge but also yields fruitful labor. Although the subject matter might be easy, it is not easy to communicate with the students. I learned to become more flexible and more innovative in developing activities and strategies that will best suit the students. In teaching, it is always important to think of the well-being of the students even if it means you have to adjust.
